Acrobat Ants are best recognized by the distinctive way that the worker ants carry their abdomens above the rest of their body as if they were performing a balancing act. Acrobat Ants vary in color from yellow-brown to dark brown, and their heart-shaped abdomen is almost always darker than the rest of their body. Worker ants are about 1/8" to 1/4" long, and have a heart-shaped abdomen. When disturbed they will bite fiercely and leave an irritating sore.

Acrobat Ants may invade the home for food (sweets and meat). They feed on insects, and sweet juices such as plant nectar, aphid's honeydew, or sweet saps. Acrobat Ants nest both indoors and outdoors, under wood, such as stumps, under boards, in hollow trees, under trash, rocks, in windows and door frames.

Acrobat Ants can be blocked from entering homes by by sealing exterior cracks around windows, in siding joints or around door frames. Killing Acrobat Ants can be challenging because it may require several treatments which includes using an insecticide barrier along the house foundation, by treating the nest of the Acrobat Ants, and any of several ways to bait or poison indoor ants. Any Acrobat Ant colonies that are found indoors should be treated by eliminating all moisture problems, and by using safe ant sprays or insecticides applied inside of infested walls.
